A conversation with Biz Moms founder Margarita Serova
There are business ideas. And then there are businesses born from survival. For Margarita Serova, founder of Biz Moms, the idea came during one of the loneliest seasons of her life.
An immigrant. A new mother. A professional woman navigating identity, ambition, isolation, and motherhood—all at once.
On paper, she had nearly two decades of experience in marketing and business development, multiple degrees, and an established professional background. But after immigrating to Canada and becoming a mother, everything shifted. She found herself home with young children, isolated from the professional identity she once knew, and struggling to find spaces where motherhood and ambition could exist together.
“I started Biz Moms for my own need,” she shared. “I needed a place where people like me could come and talk to each other.” What began as a small meetup through the Creative Mornings community quickly became something much bigger.
At her very first meetup, eight moms showed up. One of them arrived with her fourth baby, who was just four months old. “She was changing diapers in between passionately talking about her business idea,” Margarita said. “I looked at her and thought...who am I to complain?”
That moment stayed with Margarita. Because Biz Moms was never really about networking. It was about visibility.
“Motherhood Is Invisible Labour”
Throughout our conversation, Margarita returned to one theme repeatedly: so much of motherhood is invisible.
The emotional labour. The mental load. The quiet weight of guilt. The pressure to somehow succeed professionally while also being the “perfect” parent. And perhaps most painfully, the silence around it.
"When you become a mom, you become quieter," she explained. "You stop speaking up because you’re just trying to survive."
Biz Moms was built to change that. Not with perfection. Not with polished presentations. But with honesty. Sometimes their monthly meetups become emotional before they become strategic.
"A lot of moms cry during introductions," Margarita said. "And we have one rule: don’t apologize. If you need to cry, just cry." That kind of honesty is rare. But maybe that’s exactly why it matters.
More Than “Just Moms”
One of the most powerful parts of speaking with Margarita was hearing how deeply she believes mothers are underestimated.
Not weakened by motherhood. Upgraded by it.
"Mothers are the best leaders," she said confidently.
She spoke about building marketing campaigns while raising children at home. Running projects during nap schedules. Executing work in tiny windows of time with laser focus.
"If you don’t do it now while the baby is sleeping, you lose the opportunity," she laughed.
She believes motherhood creates resilience, efficiency, emotional intelligence, and adaptability in ways society still fails to recognize.
And honestly? After hearing her speak for an hour, it’s hard to disagree.
Creating Space for Moms to Exist Fully
Biz Moms now hosts monthly meetups in Winnipeg designed intentionally for mothers.
Kid-friendly. Flexible. Welcoming. Because as Margarita pointed out, "Not every networking space is built for moms."
And that one sentence says a lot. The reality is many mothers want community. They want connection. They want to pursue ideas. They want to build businesses.
But they also have children beside them. Lunches to pack. Sick days. Bedtimes. Mental load. Invisible labour.
Biz Moms creates space for all of that to exist together. Not after motherhood. Not once things calm down. Not when life gets easier.
Now.
Exactly as they are.
One Word: Unstoppable
Near the end of our conversation, I asked Margarita one final question: “What’s one word that describes moms in business?” Her answer came instantly. "Unstoppable."
And honestly? That feels exactly right.
Because the women showing up to Biz Moms aren’t waiting for perfect conditions. They’re building businesses during nap times. Showing up to networking events exhausted. Balancing side hustles with full-time jobs. Learning to believe in themselves again. Sometimes while carrying diaper bags. Sometimes while carrying entire households. But they keep showing up anyway.
And maybe this Mother’s Day, that deserves a little more recognition. A little more celebration. And a lot more conversation.
Recently adding TEDx speaker to her growing resume, Margarita continues to advocate for mothers, visibility, and creating spaces where women feel seen, not just as caregivers, but as leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs.
